Richardson seeks high school applicants and employers to sponsor them in Mayor’s Summer Internship program

The Richardson Mayor’s Summer Internship program, which provides high school students experience in a professional workplace, is accepting applications until Feb. 29 from current high school juniors who live in the city or attend Richardson ISD.

Mayor Paul Voelker is also seeking local employers, through April 1, who want to sponsor the interns. At a kickoff event Tuesday, he called for businesses to “help boost our next generation workforce,” according to a news release.

“This is a phenomenal program that provides opportunity for employers to reach a future generation of workers and for students to learn about careers and not just jobs,” Voelker said. “I have met many of these students and they are hard-working and dedicated young adults who are an asset to our community and to our future workforce, and I encourage everyone who can to consider taking part by either sponsoring a student or hiring one.”

The June 1 to Aug. 7 program, which is in its third year, connects employer-sponsors with student interns. In 2019, 41 teenagers and 45 employers participated, up from 24 in each of the first two years, according to a statement on the program’s website.

Students earned a minimum of $10 an hour last year and worked 20 to 40 hours a week at workplaces that included city agencies, churches and companies such as Atmos Energy, Geico and Texas Instruments.

Representatives from Alliance Architects, Argo Data Resource Corporation, Atmos, Atrium Hospitality, Corgan, Dallas Area Rapid Transit, Durkin Enterprises, Geico, PBK Architects, Richland College and The University of Texas at Dallas attended Tuesday’s event. RISD Superintendent Jeannie Stone and five students who participated in the program in 2019 also attended.

“Many of our interns are the first in their families to go on to college, so this program has been especially meaningful to these students who see firsthand the connection between a college degree and their dream job,” Stone said in the news release. “Getting to be part of a corporation, hospital, government agency or nonprofit teaches invaluable life lessons, instills confidence and inspires students to set their goals high.”

Applicants much be 16 years old by June 1 and able to legally work in the United States. Other requirements include a 2.5 GPA by March 31, a solid school attendance record and a letter of recommendation from campus leaders.

Prospective interns will be able to compete for placements with employers at the Intern Job Fair scheduled for April 20. Before starting work, the interns will have to complete work-readiness training and perform some community service.

Students also have to complete online workforce readiness courses. Half-day training sessions are scheduled for Feb. 29 at Pearce High School, March 10 at Berkner and March 26 at Richardson. A leadership workshop is scheduled for May 28–29.
