Restaurants come and go quickly as consumers’ tastes change at the speed of the latest Yelp review.

In Richardson, one restaurant has remained a favorite for almost 20 years: Afrah Mediterranean Restaurant and Pastries.

The family-run restaurant offers rich, exotic and authentic Lebanese fare influenced by a variety of Mediterranean flavors. Most of the dishes on the menu evolved from the recipes of the owners’ mother.

“We started as a pastry shop in February of 2002,” said Ayad Elhor, owner and manager of Afrah. “Our Mediterranean sweets became so popular that we decided to provide more of our family’s southern Lebanese recipes to our customers. Eventually we evolved into the full-service restaurant we are today.”

Afrah’s food is a feast for the senses.

While famous for its Shawarma pita sandwiches, the establishment has a large menu, which includes gyros, falafels, kababs, hummus, grape leaves, baba ghannouj, fresh bread, homemade gelato, baklava and many other Mediterranean favorites. Everything is prepared in-house with Halal meats and the freshest ingredients. The eatery offers many of these options on its daily lunch buffet.

But don’t take the owners’ word for it. The reviews speak for themselves. Afrah maintains a solid four-star rating on with almost 1,000 reviews, 4.4 stars with 900+ reviews on the Afrah Facebook page and four stars with 2,500 reviews on Google. Afrah is Zagat rated and has been featured on the popular Food Network show Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives with Guy Fieri, as well as in the Dallas Morning News and D Magazine.

The atmosphere at Afrah is family-oriented and casual, with spacious patio seating. Catering and gift cards are available, as is Hookah on the patio.
